Choosing a Mechanic

Selecting a mechanic can cause anxiety in any car owner. Try these simple tips.

  1. Remember that most mechanics are honest, and willing to help you make your car last as long as possible.

  2. Base your decision on recommendations from friends. Chances are, if they are able to trust him, you can too.

  3. Check to see that the mechanic has been certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

  4. Build a relationship with a mechanic. You wouldn't go to a doctor and ask him to immediately perform open heart surgery on you. Take your car in for its regular maintenance. Get to know your mechanic and let him get to know you. This will help you learn to trust the person who is working on your car.

  5. Help your mechanic help you by giving him concrete information about your car. For instance,
    • When does your problem or noise occur? Are your turning left or right? Braking or accelerating? Are you in a particular gear?
    • Does the problem or noise stay the same, get worse or improve in any particular situation?
    • Where is the problem or noise coming from - the front or rear? The engine? The right or left?
    • Is there any other unique or pertinent information that would help the mechanic? For instance, have you just returned from a 5,000 mile trip? Have you recently clipped a curb? When was the last time your car was serviced?
